Trama
Eddie Jessup, giovane scienziato, rivolge i suoi interessi alle ricerche sulle origini della vita attraverso la mente umana. Aiutato da due colleghi, Jessup studia i risultati di un test cui sono stati sottoposti alcuni studenti: si tratta di immergersi in una vasca di acqua salata e di rimanere in quella posizione soli e al buio: in tal modo si arriva alla perdita di coscienza della realtà e, forse, al recupero di sensazioni appartenenti ai primordi della vita umana. Ma a Jessup questi risultati non bastano, sente il bisogno di sperimentare su se stesso il test, portandolo anzi all'estremo limite della resistenza umana. Il matrimonio con Emily, scienziata come lui, e la nascita di due bambine non cambiano i suoi progetti, anche se lo mettono di fronte ai rischi dell'impresa e gli procurano crisi nervose e dubbi continui.
