In Inghilterra, nel VI secolo, muore il re Uther Pendragon. Uther non ha lasciato un erede al trono e, senza un re, sembra che la terra sia destinata ad essere lacerata dalla guerra. Improvvisamente, la "spada nella roccia" appare a Londra, con una scritta che proclama che "chiunque estrarrà questa spada da questa roccia e da questa incudine, sarà di diritto re d'Inghilterra". Sebbene molti provino ad estrarre la spada, nessuno riesce a smuoverla nemmeno di un centimetro, e la spada alla fine viene dimenticata, lasciando l'Inghilterra nei secoli bui......
Arthur (aka Wart) is a young boy who aspires to be a knight's squire. On a hunting trip he falls in on Merlin, a powerful but amnesiac wizard who has plans for Wart beyond mere squiredom. He starts by trying to give Wart an education (whatever that is), believing that once one has an education, one can go anywhere. Needless to say, it doesn't quite work out that way.........
