Trama
Michael Faraday, professore di storia in un college, abita con il figlio Grant di dieci anni nel quartiere residenziale di Arlington Road, alla periferia di Washington. Michael è ancora sconvolto per la scomparsa della moglie, un'agente FBI uccisa in servizio due anni prima. Per una serie di circostanze, Michael e Grant hanno occasione di frequentare i loro vicini di casa, i coniugi Oliver e Cheryl Lang che si dimostrano molto cortesi e affabili. Ben presto il loro figlio Brady e Grant diventano amici inseparabili. Ma proprio mentre i rapporti diventano più stretti, Michael è assalito da alcuni dubbi.
Deciderà di indagare su di loro scoprendo che fanno parte di un gruppo terroristico.
Si accorgerà troppo tardi di essere divenuto uno strumento in mano loro.
Ispirato all'attentato terroristico (1995) di Oklahoma City (78 morti tra cui 17 bambini), la sceneggiatura di Ehren Kruger ha tre bersagli polemici: a) togliere la maschera del perbenismo della media borghesia, tutta patria e chiesa; b) spiegare che il terrorismo non è sempre opera di stranieri, islamici o maniaci isolati, ma di frange fanatiche interne di estrema destra; c) rivelare come queste frange abbiano talvolta la complicità o la copertura del potere (qui l'FBI).
