Trama
Colpito da una nube radioattiva, Scott Carey comincia velocemente a perdere peso e statura. La sua casa diventa un campo di battaglia pieno di trappole potenzialmente mortali. Dopo aver affrontato un gatto e un ragno, si perde nell'infinitamente piccolo.
Da una sceneggiatura che Richard Matheson cav? dal suo romanzo The Shrinking Man, J. Arnold ha tratto un film inquietante, una delle vette della SF degli anni '50. Il tema della paranoia, costante nella narrativa di Matheson, si mescola con due temi ricorrenti in altri film del regista: il progresso scientifico che diventa distruttivo per l'uomo e la perdita d'identit?, non disgiunta da quello dell'impotenza virile cui si accenna in una sequenza spesso tagliata in TV: alto un metro e a disagio con la moglie, Carey inizia una relazione con una nana.
