Nell'Inghilterra del XIII secolo, Robert Longstride ? un abile arciere dell'esercito di Riccardo I, impavido sovrano in guerra coi francesi. Una freccia uccide il monarca e convince Robert e i suoi amici a congedarsi dall'armata e a fare ritorno a casa, ma nel tragitto soccorrono Sir Loxley, incaricato di annunciare l'avvenuta morte di Riccardo e di consegnare la sua corona. Sul punto di morte il nobile uomo strappa all'arciere una promessa, dovr? restituire la sua spada al vecchio padre nella contea di Nottingham. Uomo di parola, Robert si recher? nella tenuta di Loxley, dove per volere del vecchio Walter assumer? l'identit? del figlio defunto e i diritti sulla bella consorte, Marion. Superba e riottosa, la donna non vuole saperne di quell'impostore che si rivela per? gentiluomo. Scoperto di essere figlio dell'uomo che scrisse la Carta della Foresta, sventato un complotto francese ai danni dell'Inghilterra e deciso a reagire ai soprusi di Giovanni Senzaterra e senza cuore, Robert impugner? arco e frecce e cavalcher? coi suoi uomini per la vittoria. Restituita la gloria alla sua terra, l'arciere viene dichiarato fuorilegge. Rifugiatosi nella foresta di Sherwood con una Marion ormai innamorata diventer? Robin Hood e leggenda.
Dopo il generale Massimo Decimo Meridio, divenuto poi stella dell'arena, Ridley Scott mette in scena un altro eroe guerriero di impeccabile fattura, interpretato dal volto e dalla fisicit? gladiatoria di Russell Crowe. Meno epico e rutilante del Gladiatore, Robin Hood, storia di un esperto arciere a un passo da Sherwood e dalla leggenda, esaudisce comunque l'evasione nel passato e l'identificazione con un personaggio verticalmente positivo. Spade sferraglianti, fendenti metallici, lame nella carne, frecce di fuoco nel cielo, sangue a fiotti, corpi fatti a pezzi, la contea di Nottingham mutua il Colosseo e diventa una formidabile macchina teatrale piena di trucchi e sorprese, meraviglie e attrazioni, rivelando al suo centro un fuorilegge impenitente, fedele a un codice antico e alla "bucolica" Marion di Cate Blanchett.[/color]
