Il periodo storico ? uno di quelli pi? cari della BBC, l?inizio del 1800 delle guerre napoleoniche; ma l?Inghilterra narrata si discosta da quella reale solo per un piccolo presupposto: la magia ? reale anche se da lungo tempo si ? persa nei meandri della storia. Troppo volgare per essere praticata da un gentlemen, ma troppo affascinante per non essere studiata con attenzione, sopravvive solo nei libri degli accademici e nei ridicoli circoli di appassionati non praticanti. Ma le cose sono destinate a cambiare quando fa il suo ingresso in scena Gilbert Norrell, un ometto riservato e cauto che con tutti i suoi libri ha deciso di ridare dignit? alla magia e di riportarla in auge. Il suo destino e quello di Johnatan Strange, un giovane entusiasta e avventato anche lui promettente mago, sono strettamente legati da un profezia che li vede destinati a scontrarsi e a mutare per sempre il corso della storia stessa.
Set in England during the Napoleonic wars at the beginning of the 19th century, the series presents an alternative history where magic is widely acknowledged, but rarely practiced. Living in the rural north, Mr Norrell (Eddie Marsan) of Hurtfew Abbey is able to make the statues of York Minster talk and move. His manservant John Childermass (Enzo Cilenti) persuades him to travel to London to help in the war against France. While there, Mr Norrell encounters a leading member of the government and makes magic respectable in the realm when he conjures a fairy to bring the minister's fianc?e (Alice Englert) back to life. Meanwhile, Jonathan Strange (Bertie Carvel) meets Vinculus (Paul Kaye), a street magician, while attempting to find a respectable profession, as demanded by his love Arabella (Charlotte Riley). Strange is told by Vinculus that he is destined to be a great magician and so he begins to study magic
