Antartide, 1982. La quiete della base scientifica statunitense U.S. Outpost #31 viene interrotta dall'arrivo di un elicottero partito da una stazione di ricerca norvegese, che sta inseguendo un husky. Gli occupanti della base assistono sgomenti alla scena che si conclude con l'esplosione dell'elicottero colpito per sbaglio da un ordigno che il cacciatore intendeva lanciare contro la preda, per? uno di essi sopravvive scendendo in tempo dal mezzo e cerca di fucilare il quadrupede, ma rimane ucciso in un conflitto a fuoco col team dopo che uno di essi era rimasto ferito ad una gamba. Il team statunitense, guidato da MacReady, non capisce cosa stia succedendo e decide di indagare sulla provenienza dell'elicottero.....
An American scientific expedition to the frozen wastes of the Antarctic is interrupted by a group of seemingly mad Norwegians pursuing and shooting a dog. The helicopter pursuing the dog explodes, eventually leaving no explanation for the chase. During the night, the dog mutates and attacks other dogs in the cage and members of the team that investigate........
