The Cure ? un gruppo musicale post-punk inglese, i cui esordi risalgono al 1976, in piena esplosione new wave (in compagnia di gruppi come Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen). La band, la cui formazione ? variata pi? o meno regolarmente nel corso degli anni, comprendendo da un minimo di due fino ad un massimo di sei membri, ha raggiunto l'apice del successo tra la met? e la fine degli anni ottanta (soprattutto con i singoli Close to Me e Lullaby, tratti, rispettivamente, dai due album The Head on the Door del 1985 e Disintegration del 1989). Robert Smith, il cantante, chitarrista, autore dei testi e compositore di quasi tutte le musiche, nonch? fondatore del gruppo, ? l'unico membro ad averne sempre fatto parte dagli esordi ad oggi.
I Cure sono stati una delle prime band alternative ad avere successo, in un'era in cui l'alternative rock era ancora un genere di nicchia. Nel 1992 NME scrive: ?[negli anni ottanta] i Cure sono diventati una macchina di successi goth (19 ad oggi), un fenomeno internazionale e, s?, la band alternative con pi? successo che si sia mai trascinata svogliatamente su questa Terra?.
Numerosissime band hanno pagato omaggio nel corso degli anni a Smith e compagni, a cominciare dalle influenze pi? riconosciute dalla critica, come Interpol, My Chemical Romance e Placebo, che Smith accoglie con benevolenza, fino a gruppi "insospettabili" come Red Hot Chili Peppers, Korn, The Raveonettes, The Dandy Warhols, che hanno nel tempo riproposto come cover vari brani dei Cure. Sono inoltre numerosi i tribute album veri e propri. Un'altra band che ha subito una forte influenza dai Cure ? quella dei Deftones, ritenuti insieme ai Korn i fondatori del movimento nu metal, che con l'album White Pony, ritenuto insieme al precedente Around the Fur il loro capolavoro, ha deciso di incorporare nel proprio sound elementi di post-punk e new wave.
