Ash Williams e la sua fidanzata Linda vanno in vacanza nei boschi, per soggiornare in una rustica casa di legno molto isolata. Mentre Linda si sta cambiando, Ash trova un sinistro libro, con la copertina in pelle umana e apparentemente scritto col sangue. Lo accompagna un magnetofono, in cui un certo professor Knowby, archeologo, ha registrato i suoi appunti riguardanti il ritrovamento del testo, la sua traduzione durante il soggiorno nei boschi con la moglie, e gli strani eventi che han fatto seguito alla lettura dei primi passaggi dell'opera......
