Il film inizia con un flashback, in cui si viene a conoscenza del fatto che nel 740 d.C. il celebre Mago Merlino aveva tre fedeli apprendisti stregoni che aveva reso immuni alla morte naturale: Balthazar Blake, Veronica e Maxim Horvath. Quest'ultimo però lo tradì in favore di Morgana, riuscendo a sopraffare lo stesso Merlino. Questi, prima di morire, diede a Balthazar il compito di trovare il Sommo Merliniano........
Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). Balthazar can't do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic,.................
