Ed Gentry, Lewis Medlock, Bobby Trippe e Drew Ballinger sono quattro amici di Atlanta che decidono di fare uno strappo alla regola e passare un fine settimana nei boschi dei monti Appalachi, discendendo il fiume Cahulawassee in una zona che presto verrà inondata d'acqua per la costruzione di una diga.
I quattro sono molto diversi tra loro: Lewis è il più spavaldo e avventuroso ed è fermamente convinto che, in vista della distruzione che la civiltà urbana trascinerà con sé, sia necessario imparare a sopravvivere nella natura selvaggia e porta con sé un arco da caccia nero, che non usa da tempo; Drew è un uomo dagli ideali solidi, intelligente, amante della musica e della giustizia; Bobby rappresenta invece il classico stereotipo dello statunitense ottuso e cinico, ma non cattivo, mentre Ed è un tipo mite, capace di adattarsi perfettamente a qualsiasi situazione............
