La storia si svolge nella frenetica e tecnologica città di San Fransokyo. Hiro Hamada è un giovane e geniale ragazzino di 14 anni, che la notte partecipa ai bot duelli (incontri clandestini dove gli sfidanti fanno combattere dei robot costruiti da loro stessi che si svolgono nei vicoli e nelle zone più malfamate della città) dove frequentemente vince, ottenendo notevoli vincite di denaro. Dopo l'ennesima vittoria però alcuni giocatori decidono di impartirgli una bella lezione, dalla quale fugge con l'aiuto del fratello Tadashi, con il quale scappa per poi essere preso e arrestato dalla polizia.
