Il 28 giugno 2005, un team delle US Navy Seal, le forze speciali della Marina degli Stati Uniti, si inoltra fra le montagne dell'Afghanistan per portare a compimento l'Operazione Red Wings: eliminare Ahmad Shah, un ricercatissimo e pericoloso leader talebano. Ad effettuare una prima ricognizione, nel tentativo di appurare la fattibilità della missione e di individuare l'obiettivo da abbattere, sono quattro marine di età compresa fra i 25 e i 29 anni: il tenente Michael P. Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Marcus Luttrell (Mark Wahlberg), Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch) e Matthew Axelson (Ben Foster). Mentre sono intenti a perlustrare il territorio, i quattro marine incrociano la loro strada con quella di tre pastori afghani, fra cui un ragazzo non ancora adolescente, e si trovano di fronte a un difficile dilemma etico: ucciderli, evitando così di compromettere l'operazione, o lasciarli liberi, con il rischio che possano avvertire i talebani. Poco dopo questo incontro, all'improvviso si scatena l'inferno: un inferno dal quale soltanto uno, fra i quattro soldati, avrà la fortuna di uscire vivo...
