Il protagonista senza nome, consulente del ramo assicurativo di un'importante casa automobilistica, è il prototipo dello yuppie frustrato dalla vita moderna: insonne, ansioso, stordito dal jet lag. Trova un'apparente calma solo cominciando a frequentare gruppi d'ascolto per persone affette da mali incurabili. In questo modo incontra anche Marla Singer, una ragazza che finge come lui di avere gravi malattie, pur di poter incontrare persone che sappiano essere pienamente sincere con lei.
Durante uno dei suoi viaggi di lavoro, il protagonista fa la conoscenza di Tyler Durden, un originale ed eccentrico produttore e venditore di saponette. Quello stesso giorno, tornato dal lavoro, il protagonista scopre che la propria abitazione è andata distrutta in un'esplosione causata da una perdita di gas propagatasi all'interno di essa; disperato, affidandosi al caso, telefona a Tyler e decide di incontrarlo nuovamente. Nasce tra i due un affiatato quanto bizzarro rapporto, al punto che Tyler deciderà di ospitarlo nella propria fatiscente abitazione...
