Sul pianeta Nibiru l'eruzione di un enorme vulcano minaccia di distruggere la primitiva civiltà locale. Il capitano dell'Enterprise James T. Kirk viola la Prima direttiva della Federazione salvando la popolazione indigena e mostrando la sua nave per strappare Spock da morte certa dalle fauci del vulcano. Per tale motivo Kirk viene degradato al ruolo di primo ufficiale sulla nave dell'ammiraglio Pike, mentre Spock viene riassegnato a un'altra nave.
