Los Angeles, 1937: l'investigatore J.J. Gittes viene assoldato da una donna che si presenta come la signora Mulwray per investigare sulla presunta infedeltà del marito, Hollis Mulwray, l'ingegnere che dirige il Dipartimento per l'acqua e l'energia elettrica di Los Angeles. Gittes lo pedina, capisce che si sta opponendo alla creazione di un nuovo bacino idrico, e scatta delle foto che lo ritraggono in compagnia di una giovane donna, che poi vengono pubblicate in prima pagina sul giornale del giorno successivo............
JJ 'Jake' Gittes is a private detective who seems to specialize in matrimonial cases. He is hired by Evelyn Mulwray when she suspects her husband Hollis, builder of the city's water supply system, of having an affair. Gittes does what he does best and photographs him with a young girl but in the ensuing scandal.......
