Trama
"Fammi una bistecca. Ma di carne, stavolta."
Nel 1951 il vecchio proprietario del cinema muore e lascia il locale al giovane Sonny che si trascina annoiato tra un'amante quarantenne e l'amicizia protettiva con un ritardato mentale. Omaggio all'«America amara» e alla sua provincia. Siamo agli inizi degli anni '50 a Anarene, piccola città del Texas. La guerra di Corea è alle porte e i giovani, che presto saranno chiamati alle armi, lasciano lentamente alle spalle le loro illusioni, la loro gioventù e i loro miti. Il vento sembra spazzar via la vecchia vita del paese, dove tutto è destinato a morire, anche il cinema.
Girato in bianco e nero come da suggerimento di Orson Welles, il film è il primo successo di Peter Bogdanovich, che prima di diventare regista era stato un accanito cinefilo e un accreditato critico cinematografico.
Nel 1998 è stato scelto per la conservazione nel National Film Registry della Biblioteca del Congresso degli Stati Uniti.
Sceneggiato dal regista con Larry McMurtry, autore del romanzo omonimo (1966).
