Trama
E' una caldissima ed afosa giornata estiva a New York, ed in un quartiere abitato quasi esclusivamente da neri resiste la pizzeria di Sal e dei suoi figli. Nonostante la tensione crescente tra i neri e gli italoamericani, Sal non ne vuol proprio sapere di vendere la pizzeria ed andarsene. La giornata prosegue sempre più calda e tesa, finchè un incidente provocato da Baggin Out con Radio Rahem, non scatena l'esagerata reazione di Sal.
La calura è il tessuto connettivo di un'azione che si svolge dall'alba alla notte di una torrida giornata estiva sulla Bedford-Stuyvesant a Brooklyn, ha il suo epicentro in una pizzeria, il suo riferimento in una stazione radiofonica e si risolve in uno scoppio di violenza. È il 3° e il più maturo film di S. Lee: costruzione drammaturgica di ammirevole compattezza e ritmo, acuta analisi sociologica del calderone etnico nordamericano, un lucido discorso antirazzista che non indulge alla demagogia né ai buoni sentimenti, una colonna musicale (di Bill Lee, padre di Spike) di forte suggestione, affetto e rispetto per i personaggi.
