Trama
"La vita non è che una tazza di tè..."
Dal romanzo Clean Break di Lionel White, sceneggiato da Kubrick con lo scrittore Jim Thompson che con il regista collaborò anche in Orizzonti di gloria e gli scrisse il trattamento di Killer at Large che non fu mai realizzato. Uscito dal carcere, Johnny mette a punto un minuzioso piano per una rapina in un ippodromo che frutta due milioni di dollari. Il grosso bottino suscita avidità e ferocia tra i complici. È un film che rivelò Kubrick e indusse la critica americana a parlare di un secondo Welles. La sua cinepresa bracca i personaggi con l'occhio di un terrier che sorveglia un gruppo di topi. Fondato sulla rottura della continuità narrativa che permette allo spettatore di seguire lo svolgimento dell'azione secondo diverse prospettive, il film ha un ritmo incalzante e una suspense di tenuta infallibile.
