Trama
Un giardiniere ignorante, e da anni imbottito solo di TV, viene scambiato per un famoso e saggio filosofo. Di equivoco in equivoco diventa una celebrità nazionale, e viene ricevuto alla Casa Bianca come consigliere.
"Oltre il Giardino" è una amara e, al tempo stesso, esilarante rappresentazione della nuova società apolide, nutrita di frasi fatte e televisione, in cui il problema dell'incomunicabilità sembra aver perduto la sua importanza, poiché non vi è più nulla da comunicare realmente, oltre l'inadeguatezza che coinvolge la stessa classe dirigente così come i signori della comunicazione e dell'informazione.
Con la sua regia, Hal Ashby ha saputo trasporre magistralmente su pellicola, con equilibrio e attenzione, il romanzo "Presenze" dello scrittore polacco Jerzy Kosinski, da cui il film è tratto.
Mentre la straordinaria interpretazione di Peter Sellers nei panni di Chance una specie di progenitore di Forrest Gump cala lo spettatore nella desolante dimensione tipica del teatro dell'assurdo, aggiungendovi un pizzico di umorismo British.
