Trama
"Voi siete dei bravi uomini! Vi chiedo solo di uccidermi..."
Un emigrato messicano viene ucciso da una guardia di frontiera tanto stupida quanto arrogante. Pete, suo unico vero amico, decide di scoprire chi è il colpevole della sua morte e (visto che le forze dell'ordine preferiscono insabbiare il caso) lo punisce personalmente sequestrandolo e costringendolo a viaggiare con lui e con il cadavere del messicano. La meta è il paesino da cui l'uomo proveniva e in cui aveva chiesto di essere sotterrato.
Grande e positiva sorpresa Tommy Lee Jones regista. Rivisita il western 'alla Pechinpah' ma lo fa senza citazionismi inutili. Inserisce invece il forte tema dell'amicizia che va al di là dell'appartenenza a un popolo e che rispetta un codice d'onore ineludibile. Tommy Lee Jones riesce poi ad evitare il rischio di concentrare tutta l'attenzione su di sé offrendo ampio spazio alle prove degli altri attori. Tra tutti, indimenticabile, la caratterizzazione di Levon Helm nel ruolo del vecchio cieco che vive isolato.
