Trama
"Sono sempre un po' ringiovanito quando affronto qualche avventura."
In una piccola città portuale alla fine del Settecento, una compagnia teatrale mette in scena le gesta del barone Munchausen, sino a quando sul palco non sale il "vero" barone.
Le madornali e iperboliche imprese del barone di Münchhausen hanno 3 fonti tutte tedesche del Settecento (il vero barone Karl Friedrich Hieronymus von M., l'erudito Rudolph Erich Raspe e il poeta Gottfried August Bürger), furono illustrate da G. Doré nel 1862 e portate sullo schermo già nel 1911 (G. Méliès), 1913 (E. Cohl), 1914 (muto italiano), 1943 (J. von Backy), 1962 (Baron Prasil).
Con 40 milioni di dollari e collaboratori di prim'ordine, Gilliam ha rimanipolato la vecchia materia all'insegna del meraviglioso su grande scala, iniettandovi l'umorismo stravagante di Lewis Carroll e la buffoneria esorbitante dei Monty Python. Effetti speciali strabilianti.
