Trama
"La vita mi ha servito delle mani perdenti, o magari non le ho sapute giocare, chissà..."
California, 1949: Ed Crane, un barbiere di provincia chiuso, laconico e succubo di tutti, segretamente desideroso di cambiamento, sospetta che la moglie Doris abbia una relazione. Per reagire in qualche modo decide di investire denaro nel nuovo business del lavaggio a secco, ma per entrare nell'affare servono molti soldi così Ed decide di ricattare l'amante di Doris... ma, come capita nei romanzi di James Cain, nei thriller in bianco e nero e nei film dei fratelli Coen, nulla funziona, tutto va male, la sfortuna colpisce personaggi viziosi e virtuosi configurandosi come un requiem per il Sogno Americano e l'inizio dell'Età dell'Incertezza.
I fratelli Coen tornano, dopo Fratello, dove sei?,con un film altrettanto importante ma meno accattivante per il pubblico. Una sceneggiatura egregia che avrebbe meritato un Oscar. Rigorosi, attraverso un umorismo sottile e uno splendido bianco e nero, confermano la passione per il cinema noir. La provincia, le manie dell'epoca, il razzismo, il racket del gioco, tutto è rappresentato ad arte.
