Trama
"Senti qua: da piccolo credevi in Babbo Natale, e adesso in Dio."
L'anziano professor Isak Borg, un luminare della medicina, si reca a ritirare un ambito riconoscimento nell'Aula Magna dell'Università di Lund. Prima di intraprendere il viaggio fa un sogno premonitore che lo invita a riconsiderare tutta la sua vita. Nel lungo viaggio lo accompagna la nuora Marianne che è in crisi con il marito, un uomo gelido ed egoista. La sosta presso la casa natale di Borg è l'occasione per ripensare al passato e ritornare nel "posto delle fragole".
Capolavoro del Bergman anni Cinquanta, Il posto delle fragole è un road movie esistenziale, colmo di spunti, spesso doloroso, brillante da un punto di vista formale come non era stato nessun altro titolo del regista fino ad allora. Il nodo, squisitamente bergmaniano, della nostalgia per la giovinezza ha qui uno sviluppo differente rispetto ad altre opere precedenti e anche successive, quasi l'autore ammettesse la possibilità di poter tornare indietro, di poter cambiare ciò che è stato. Al centro rimane, infatti, la figura del cambiamento, di una vera trasformazione, da parte di un uomo che riesce a scalfire la propria maschera di indifferenza poco prima di addormentarsi per sempre: straordinariamente efficaci e mai così chiare, nella loro simbologia, le sequenze dei sogni-incubi. Probabilmente si tratta del film-bilancio per eccellenza, sicuramente di una pietra miliare del cinema, citato, rifatto, imitato, ma mai eguagliato.
