Trama
"Hai ucciso chi ti ha ucciso?"
Alla fine dell'Ottocento William Blake, giovane contabile, viaggia in treno da Cleveland (Ohio) a Machine (Arizona) alla ricerca di un impiego. Ucciso un uomo per legittima difesa, fugge braccato dai cacciatori di taglie. Lo aiuta il pellerossa Nessuno, convinto che egli sia l'omonimo poeta inglese (1757-1827). Il suo è un viaggio iniziatico verso la morte.
Scritto da Jarmush che inizialmente si era scelto come cosceneggiatore Rudy Wurlitzer, importante figura della controcultura USA negli anni '60 e '70. È il migliore tra i visionari acid-western di quel periodo. Più che anomalo, è un film innovatore nel genere, specialmente nel rapporto con i nativi e la loro cultura. È un western lento, qua e là onirico con un BN più nero che bianco, paesaggi insoliti senza cielo, forti striature ironiche e grottesche, momenti di violenza risolti in modi sdrammatizzati, un eroe antieroico, un buffo tormentone sul tabacco che manca, dolente colonna musicale alla chitarra di Neil Young.
