Trama
Un giovane si trova per caso depositario di un pericoloso segreto di spionaggio affidatogli da una donna morente. In base a tali confidenze egli si mette alla ricerca di un certo professore per avvertirlo del pericolo che corre. La polizia, ritenendolo reo della morte della donna, lo insegue. Per due volte egli è arrestato e per due volte riesce a fuggire. Finalmente dopo drammatici episodi può smascherare i veri colpevoli.
Trasposizione cinematografica del romanzo di John Buchan "I 39 scalini" (nel 1959 e nel 1978 saranno girati due remake rispettivamente dai registi Ralph Thomas e Don Sharp).
Un Hitchcock sicuramente alle prese con l'abbecedario del brivido che lo avrebbe immortalato, ma già ossessionato da trame di spionaggio internazionale.
