Trama
THX 1138 è operaio in una fabbrica in cui si costruiscono i poliziotti automatizzati di una società del futuro in cui il desiderio è proibito e tutti sono assuefatti a una quotidianità ripetitiva. Finché un giorno la sua compagna lo convince a smettere di assumere le pillole sedative che conservano tutti in una sorta di catatonia collettiva. Ora THX può iniziare la fuga verso la libertà. Ma non sarà solo.
Il giovane George Lucas realizzò quale prova di diploma all'UCLA (prestigiosa scuola di cinema statunitense) un cortometraggio di fantascienza che vinse il National Student Film Festival nel 1968. È da quell'esordio fortunato che, nel 1971, trovò una sua forma L'uomo che fuggì dal futuro.
Ci si ritrova un pessimismo sui destini futuri dell'uomo che non manca nell'universalmente noto ciclo di Star Wars. Qui però è la claustrofobia a regnare sovrana. Gli interni del mondo in cui THX 1138 si muove sono abbaglianti di un nitore che è proprio dell'iconografia classica dell'ospedale psichiatrico.
L'influenza della sci-fiction di un autore come Ray Bradbury si sente così come poi non mancherà quella di Asimov nella saga di Luke Skywalker. Lucas si dimostra fin dalle sue prime opere perfettamente in grado di controllare sia il set che il montaggio. Coadiuvato, per quanto riguarda le riprese, da uno staff tecnico di tutto rispetto per l'epoca e per il budget messo a disposizione da Francis Ford Coppola con la sua American Zoetrope e con a disposizione un grande attore, mai valutato per quanto effettivamente merita, come Robert Duvall.
