The Newsreader è un intenso dramma ambientato nel cuore pulsante di una redazione televisiva australiana degli anni Ottanta. Diretta da Michael Lucas, la serie non si limita a raccontare il mondo del giornalismo: lo viviseziona, mostrando le fragilità, le ambizioni e le tensioni che si celano dietro l’apparente compostezza del piccolo schermo.

La storia si svolge nel 1986 all’interno di una rete televisiva commerciale australiana, mentre il paese – e il mondo – affrontano eventi epocali come il disastro dello Shuttle Challenger, la crisi dell’AIDS e le trasformazioni culturali dell’epoca.

Al centro della narrazione troviamo Helen Norville (Anna Torv), celebre anchorwoman, e il giovane reporter Dale Jennings (Sam Reid), desideroso di affermarsi. La serie intreccia sapientemente grandi eventi storici e conflitti personali, mostrando come le notizie non siano mai davvero “solo notizie”: ogni servizio è influenzato dalle paure, dalle pressioni politiche e dalle dinamiche di potere interne alla redazione.

La scrittura è tesa, intelligente, capace di costruire un crescendo emotivo che alterna momenti di forte intensità a silenzi carichi di significato.

Stagione 1 (2021)
La prima stagione si apre all'inizio del 1986 con Helen che si sente trascurata dal suo capo e che vuole affrontare dei reportage speciali. Intanto ingaggia il promettente reporter Dale per supervisionarla. E' proprio lui a trovarla a casa dopo un tentativo di suicidio. Quindi Helen dopo un debutto non proprio perfetto è la conduttrice dell'approfondimento dopo il disastro dello shuttle Challenger che dopo pochi secondi dal decollo esplose in volo il 28 gennaio del 1986.

Stagione 2 (2023)
La seconda stagione prende le mosse nel luglio del 1987 quando troviamo Dale e Helen oramai affermati come la coppia d'oro delle notizie. I due devono coprire le elezioni federali per la rete ma sono molto frustrati dalle pressioni che stanno ricevendo. Intanto un ex collega, Geoff, passato alla concorrenza, li mette in difficoltà. La situazione si fa sempre più critica tanto che rischiano di "bucare" l'intervista ad un importante politico australiano, Paul Keating (futuro premier).

Stagione 3 (2025)
La terza stagione inizia nel dicembre del 1988 quando devono essere assegnati i premi per la televisione. E' un momento critico perché Dale è tra i concorrenti per uno dei premi più prestigiosi come personalità televisiva. Intanto Helen torna in Australia dopo aver passato un periodo all'estero come reporter. Ma la situazione la mette in crisi perché il programma News at Six dovrebbe andare in competizione proprio con Public Eye mettendo a confronto proprio Dale e Helen.
