Per cinque decenni, la cantante e compositrice Meredith Monk ha esplorato ciò che lei chiama "enunciato primordiale", ovvero il suono vocale non verbale che si trova sotto e oltre il linguaggio, esprimendo "ciò per cui non abbiamo parole." Questa esplorazione l'ha portata a creare musica che The New Yorker descrive come simultaneamente "viscerale ed eterea, cruda e rapita", un'arte che "canta, danza e medita su forze senza tempo."
