Hell's Paradise nasce dal manga di Yūji Kaku, pubblicato su Shonen Jump+ e divenuto una delle opere più inquietanti e meditate degli ultimi anni nel panorama seinen, grazie alla combinazione di elementi action, horror, folclore e introspezione filosofica. La prima stagione dell'anime, prodotta da Twin Engine e dallo studio MAPPA sotto la direzione di Kaori Makita, è stata accolta con entusiasmo per la sua capacità di restituire l'atmosfera cupa dell'opera originale, esplorando non soltanto battaglie brutali, ma anche i dilemmi interiori dei personaggi, in particolare quelli di Gabimaru, ninja condannato a morte, e di Yamada Asaemon Sagiri, sua boia e compagna di viaggio.

La storia è incentrata su Gabimaru, l’assassino più forte e spietato del suo villaggio, Iwagakure. Ritrovandosi nel braccio della morte, ha una sola possibilità di ottenere la libertà, ma la richiesta è molto più grande di quanto si aspettasse. Il compito che gli è stato affidato è quasi impossibile da portare a termine, poiché dovrebbe trovare l’Elisir di Lunga Vita su un’isola misteriosa da cui nessuno torna vivo. La prima stagione si conclude con un cliffhanger importante, in cui Gabimaru e il suo gruppo si preparano ad avventurarsi ulteriormente nell’isola.

La seconda stagione riprenderà la storia da quel punto e adatterà l’arco narrativo di Hōrai, il più lungo del manga che si estende per 51 capitoli. Mentre Gabimaru e i suoi alleati esplorano la pericolosa isola alla ricerca del leggendario elisir, incontrano nuovi e più potenti nemici, tra cui l’élite Yamada Asaemon e gli Shinobi di Iwagakure. La missione, già difficile, prende una piega inaspettata con il loro arrivo, mettendo a rischio la vita dei condannati a morte e dei samurai che li accompagnano. Inoltre, gli abitanti dell’isola affrontano conflitti interni, tra cui il gioco di potere di Zhu Jin con il Banko, intensificando ulteriormente le sfide dei personaggi. Il manga ha un totale di quattro archi narrativi, con Hōrai come terzo e l’Arco della Partenza che conclude questa storia epica.
