A più di mezzo secolo dalla sua morte, è difficile credere che prima della sua ascesa, i cantanti jazz e pop fossero legati alla tradizione di Tin Pan Alley e raramente personalizzassero le loro canzoni; solo cantanti blues come Bessie Smith e Ma Rainey davano effettivamente l'impressione di aver vissuto ciò che cantavano.
