Pubblicato dall'etichetta britannica Metro Doubles nel 2002, Essential Collection: 24 Smooth Jazz Classics si sovrappone solo all'antologia Restoration del 2001 con otto delle stesse tracce, e si concentra su materiale originariamente pubblicato dal 1974 al 1984 (a parte "Ensenada Madness" del 1995, tutto si inserisce in quel lasso di tempo). Una bella panoramica cronologica del periodo più produttivo di James, questo è un pacchetto molto attraente che include note di copertina informative e perspicaci. "Nautilus", "Westchester Lady", "Take Me to the Mardi Gras", "Angela (Theme From Taxi)", "Touchdown" e "Sign of the Times" sono tra le inclusioni. Naturalmente, questo doppio disco può servire a qualsiasi scopo: come piacevole musica di sottofondo a volte funky, come prova della tua vasta conoscenza dei campioni hip-hop o come crudele tortura per i tuoi colleghi puristi del jazz.
