Tra i tanti monster-movie americani Anni Cinquanta, questo BLACK SCORPION si segnala per la grande quantità di effetti speciali impiegati per portare massicciamente in scena non solo lo scorpione nero del titolo ma anche le sue varianti meno ingombranti. Tutta colpa di una terremotante eruzione vulcanica, che ha disintegrato i frammenti di ossidiana nei quali resistevano da secoli - perfettamente conservati - gli squadroni di megascorpioni. Liberati, eccoli pronti a marciare sulle città vicine mietendo vittime e seminando distruzione. A combatterli due scienziati giovani e piacenti insieme a una bella ragazza da loro salvata dopo una caduta da cavallo. Alcune singole sequenze (l'attacco al treno, la discesa nella caverna), realizzate con una stop-motion oggi piuttosto indifendibile, lasciano il segno per la loro ingenua spettacolarità, che associata agli insistiti (e altamente ridicoli) primi piani sul volto dello scorpione che sbava dalla bocca garantiscono risate assicurate; così come il filmato in cui si vede l'animale gigante dall'alto sui monti che sembra proprio una sagoma di cartone appiccicata sopra. Purtroppo la storia regge poco e la sceneggiatura è terribile; cosicché, quando in scena gli scorpioni non ci sono, ci si rischia di annoiare mortalmente. Terribilmente cheap lo scontro finale allo stadio.
