Un grosso tronco di legno, trasportato su un carro, si anima improvvisamente dopo che su di esso si è posata una farfalla protetta da una Fata. Il pezzo di legno, mosso da una misteriosa forza, inizia a saltare per i vicoli del paese, creando scompiglio tra gli abitanti. Il tronco ferma la sua corsa sull'uscio di casa di un vecchio falegname, di nome Geppetto, che se ne impossessa per costruirsi un burattino che gli tenga compagnia. Il burattino viene chiamato Pinocchio, e magicamente prende vita.
