Molto più che la classica jam band, i Grateful Dead sono cresciuti fino a diventare un'istituzione artistica e culturale che esisteva interamente secondo i propri termini. Sebbene inizialmente la band nascesse da una rivoluzione psichedelica nella Bay Area, a metà anni '60, musicalmente e chimicamente esplorativa, si è rapidamente evoluta dai suoi esordi acid rock, incorporando elementi dell'Americana e del country di Bakersfield in album delicatamente maestosi come American Beauty del 1970.
