“The Agency” trae ispirazione dell’originale “Le Bureau des Légends” di Eric Rochant, serie di spionaggio francese capace di diventare un vero e proprio fenomeno nel decennio scorso. Occorre dire però che fin dall’inizio Jez e John-Henry Butterworth, i due showrunner, operano un chiaro distacco per ambientazione, stile e finalità rispetto alla serie francese, guidandoci in uno scenario perfettamente connesso alla drammatica situazione dell’odierno scacchiere geopolitico dei nostri giorni. Se nella serie originale era Matthieu Kassovitz ad interpretare il protagonista, in “The Agency” abbiamo un Michael Fassbender particolarmente in parte, sempre a metà tra efficienza metallica e vulnerabilità, nei panni dell’agente della CIA Martial. Martial è stato per sei anni in Africa, coerentemente con la sua professione si è costruita una doppia identità, una doppia vita, dentro cui è entrata anche la bella e sofisticata Sami Zahir, una docente universitaria di Nairobi.
Tutto però finisce quando dal Pentagono gli viene intimato di tornare entro 48 ore a Londra e tagliare ogni legame. Il motivo è semplice: un agente sotto copertura della CIA si è ubriacato e si è fatto arrestare in Germania e potrebbe aver rivelato informazioni fondamentali riguardanti le operazioni della CIA in Est Europa, in particolare per ciò che riguarda Bielorussia e soprattutto Ucraina. Martial viene incaricato dai suoi superiori di addestrare e preparare Danny (Saura Lightfoot-Leon) un’altra agente da infiltrare. Dovrà fare i conti, assieme ai suoi superiori Bosko (Richard Gere) ed Henry (Jeffrey Wright), con la possibilità che l’intera operatività dell’Agenzia sia stata compromessa nello scacchiere europeo, proprio ora che la guerra in Ucraina è all’apice. Tuttavia, sente di non godere della fiducia completa dell’Agenzia, mentre il suo rapporto con la figlia Poppy (India Fowler) è sempre più teso e come se non bastasse, Sami torna improvvisamente dentro la sua vita. Tra misteri, false piste e colpi di scena, Martial sarà costretto a mettere in dubbio tutto ciò che pensava di sapere.
