È sempre stato un leader e durante l'adolescenza ha guidato una serie di band come Child e Dr. Zoom e i Sonic Boom. Springsteen è presto diventato il beniamino dei bar locali e ha suonato persino in posti lontani come il Fillmore di San Francisco. Faceva anche regolarmente tappa a Manhattan, esibendosi sia come bandleader che come solista nei club del Greenwich Village, imparando il suo mestiere nel modo più elementare e diversificato possibile.
