Sono gli anni Venti del diciannovesimo secolo. Soldati, esploratori, cacciatori di pelli, mercenari solcano i territori ancora sconosciuti d'America per trarne profitto. Glass è l'uomo che meglio di tutti i suoi compagni di spedizione conosce la terra impervia in cui si sono inoltrati. Il più arrogante della compagnia, Fitzgerald, si offre di restare per dargli sepoltura, ma lo tradisce orribilmente.
