San Francisco 1959: un autobus precipita da un viadotto per evitare una collisione con un'automobile che sta portando una signora verso l'ospedale nel quale nascerà il piccolo Thomas. Quattro persone restano uccise, ma da quel momento il loro angelico compito sarà quello di vegliare sul bimbo appena nato. Poi il piccolo Thomas cresce e diventa uno schifoso yuppy, ma loro non si perdono d'animo.
