Joplin era la maggiore dei suoi fratelli Michael Joplin e Laura Joplin, e frequentò la Thomas Jefferson High School, dove iniziò a dipingere e ad ascoltare artisti blues come Bessie Smith, Leadbelly, Big Mama Thornton e Odetta con gli altri ragazzi ribelli del suo quartiere. Si diplomò nel 1960, e nel 1962 abbandonò l'università a metà dei suoi studi. L'università pubblicò quindi il titolo "She Dares To Be Different" sul giornale studentesco.
