In questi Cd sono raccolte le cinquanta master takes registrate dal quartetto di Mulligan. Il gruppo avrebbe poi inciso altri brani con Lee Konitz (e negli anni a seguire vi sarebbero state alcune reunions). Questo è, dunque, l’inizio della splendida avventura nella quale Mulligan sperimentò cose nuove unite a richiami antichi, con quella superlativa capacità di scrittura che aveva già sancito il successo di «Birth Of The Cool» di Miles Davis. Il quartetto recuperava quella polifonia che il jazz, dopo i fasti di New Orleans, aveva lasciato cadere (salvo eccezioni) nel periodo Swing. A metterla in risalto c’era stata la storica decisione di fare a meno del pianoforte. Ma un discorso teorico sarebbe lunghissimo. L’importante è che questa musica vecchia di oltre mezzo secolo abbia mantenuta intatta la forza delle emozioni, che tanto aveva affascinato la Beat Generation. Sotto questo aspetto Mulligan trovò in Baker un solista di grande statura, e ritmi più che adeguati. Album imperdibile.
