All'inizio della loro carriera, i Level 42 erano esattamente una band fusion jazz-funk, contemporanei di altri gruppi funk britannici come Atmosfear, Light of the World, Incognito e Beggar & Co. Alla fine degli anni '80, tuttavia, i band - la cui musica era immediatamente riconoscibile dalla tecnica del basso a schiaffo del pollice di Mark King e dagli svolazzi del sintetizzatore del membro associato Wally Badarou - era passata al punto in cui erano spesso classificati come sophisti-pop e dance-rock, ugualmente probabilmente da collocare nel contesto di Sade and the Style Council, così come qualsiasi gruppo che ha creato un pop/rock raffinato, ottimista e ballabile. Il picco commerciale della band arrivò con World Machine del 1985, ma continuarono a registrare e fare tournée sporadicamente negli anni '90 e 2000.
