A South Beach in Florida il ménage di Albert con Armand Goldman è perfetto: omosessuali entrambi, i due convivono da un ventennio; vanno d'accordo e gestiscono un frequentatissimo locale per travestiti (il Birdcage), dove Albert, nel ruolo di Starina, si esibisce con successo. Però ha un figlio e guai si profilano all'orizzonte il giorno in cui il giovane, innamoratosi di Barbara, la figlia del rigido senatore Keely, manifesta la volontà di convolare a nozze. La madre naturale di Val esiste, ma da Armand è separata da venti anni, per cui il giovane considera come "mamma" il compagno di papà.
