Un ragionevole dubbio è un film diretto da Peter P. Croudins. A Chicago vive il giovane e ambizioso procuratore distrettuale Mitch Brockden (Dominic Cooper), felicemente sposato e con una figlia. Una sera, dopo aver bevuto al bar con amici e colleghi, Mitch torna a casa in macchina, ma durante il tragitto investe per errore un passante. Dopo aver chiamato i soccorsi, l’uomo fugge via dalla scena, lasciando a terra la vittima nella strada deserta.
La mattina seguente, Mitch scopre che il corpo è stato ritrovato nel furgone di un certo Clinton Davis (Samuel L. Jackson), che afferma la propria innocenza, dichiarando di aver voluto aiutare la vittima di un pirata della strada. Il detective Blake Kanon (Gloria Reuben) è convinta che Davis sia un serial killer, ma Mitch - sicuro dell’innocenza del sospettato - lo aiuta durante il processo, che termina con la sua assoluzione. Tuttavia il procuratore si renderà ben presto conto di aver commesso un grosso errore...
