Di nuovo in gioco, il film diretto da Robert Lorenz, vede protagonista Gus Lobel (Clint Eastwood). L'uomo è da decenni uno dei migliori scout del baseball, sempre in cerca di nuovi talenti sportivi; tuttavia, malgrado cerchi a tutti i costi di nasconderlo, l'età avanza.
Ma Gus, che è in grado di riconoscere il tipo di battuta solo dal rumore della mazza da baseball, si rifiuta di finire in "panchina" e di terminare così gli ultimi anni della sua brillante carriera.
Purtroppo però non ha scelta. L'ufficio centrale degli Atlanta Braves inizia a mettere in discussione le sue capacità, specialmente in vista della selezione di un nuovo fenomeno del baseball.
L'unica persona che potrebbe aiutarlo è l'unica alla quale Gus preferirebbe non doversi rivolgere: sua figlia Mickey (Amy Adams), un avvocato di Atlanta, una giovane donna che grazie alla sua ambizione, sta per diventare socio dello studio legale in cui lavora.
Mickey ha sempre avuto un rapporto difficile con suo padre, il quale, dopo la morte della moglie, non è stato un genitore modello. Anche ora, nei rari momenti che trascorrono insieme, lui è sempre troppo distratto dal baseball, e Mickey è convinta che sia proprio quello l'unico grande amore della sua vita. Malgrado le sue reticenze e le obiezioni di Gus, Mickey decide di accompagnarlo in un ultimo incarico in Nord Carolina, mettendo a repentaglio la propria carriera per salvare quella del padre.
