Waiting for the Barbarians, il film diretto da Ciro Guerra, segue la storia di un Magistrato (Mark Rylance), che si occupa degli eventi di un isolato insediamento di frontiera al confine di un impero senza nome. Con l'arrivo del Colonnello Joll (Johnny Depp), il cui compito è quello di informare sulla situazione di sicurezza al confine e sulle attività del "barbari," il Magistrato è in attesa di andare in pensione. Il Colonnello Joll conduce oltre la frontiera una spedizione di forze speciali, catturando i barbari che in seguito tortura pubblicamente. Il Magistrato dopo aver assistito al crudele trattamento dei prigionieri di guerra, riconsidera il suo ruolo e in crisi di coscienza si ribella al regime.
