Dopo aver assistito alla morte della madre da bambino, Barry Allen viene accolto in casa dal detective Joe West. Diventato uno scienziato forense per il Dipartimento di Polizia di Central City, Barry cerca di scoprire la verità sull'omicidio di sua madre per scagionare il padre, accusato ingiustamente e imprigionato, e le sue indagini lo portano all'acceleratore di particelle di Harrison Wells. Quando l'acceleratore di particelle dei S.T.A.R. LAB esplode a causa di un sovraccarico, il giovane viene scaraventato a terra dalla scarica di un altro fulmine mentre numerose sostanze chimiche gli si rovesciano addosso ed entra in coma. Al suo risveglio, dopo nove mesi, apprende di avere la capacità di muoversi a una velocità sovrumana ed è anche convinto, e ben presto ne avrà la conferma, di non essere l'unico meta-umano creato dall'esplosione.
