Nel 1850, in cerca di ispirazione per il suo nuovo romanzo, Herman Melville (Ben Whishaw) si reca sull’isola di Nantucket per incontrare l’anziano marinaio Thomas Nickerson (Brendan Gleeson). Dopo l’iniziale riluttanza, l’uomo rivela allo scrittore la storia del naufragio della baleniera Essex.
Circa trent’anni prima, Nickerson serviva come mozzo sotto i comandi del primo ufficiale Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth), giovane ed esperto baleniere, e dell’arrogante George Pollard (Benjamin Walker).
Dal momento che la battuta di caccia dà scarsi risultati, Pollard ignora le proteste di Chase e ordina agli uomini di dirigersi in un tratto di mare ancora inesplorato, a ovest delle coste dell’Ecuador. Nonostante gli avvertimenti di un vecchio marinaio, incontrato lungo il cammino, che aveva sconsigliato all’equipaggio di cacciare nelle acque della poderosa balena bianca, i grandi branchi di capodogli invogliano Pollard a continuare la navigazione.
Improvvisamente, tuttavia, la balena bianca emerge dalle acque e colpisce la Essex, affondandola.
Fortunatamente, gran parte dell’equipaggio riesce ad imbarcarsi frettolosamente sulle scialuppe. Gli uomini sono dispersi nel vasto oceano, senza cibo o acqua, facile prede della vendicativa balena bianca.
Dopo ben novanta giorni di naufragio, segnati da atti di inconcepibile immoralità e dalla costante sensazioni di essere braccati, gli uomini dell’equipaggio vengono avvistati e portati sulla terra ferma. Sebbene l’esperienza abbia cambiato l’atteggiamento di Pollard, tanto da portarlo a rischiare in prima persona e raccontare la storia dell’Essex, tutti saranno sottoposti all’ennesima ingiustizia. Di lì a breve, infatti, i superstiti dovranno confrontarsi con gli interessi politici ed economici del loro investitori…
