La dolce vita, film drammatico diretto da Federico Fellini, racconta le vicende di Marcello Rubini (Marcello Mastroianni), un giornalista di scoop scandalistici che vorrebbe in realtà scrivere romanzi. La pellicola, ambientata nella Roma mondana degli anni ’60, svela, attraverso diversi episodi, luci e ombre della società capitolina dell’epoca. Come l’arrivo su un elicottero di una statua del Cristo diretta al Vaticano, che suscita stupore e curiosità nei passanti, o l’incontro di Marcello con Maddalena (Anouk Aimée), affascinante donna con cui passa una notte di forte passione. Ma il reporter non è solo: ha una fidanzata, Emma (Yvonne Furneaux) che, scoperto il tradimento, tenta di togliersi la vita ingerendo delle pasticche, senza però riuscirci.
Dopo la scampata tragedia, Marcello si butta a capofitto nel lavoro, accettando di seguire per il suo giornale Sylvia (Anita Ekberg), famosa stella del cinema hollywoodiano. Bionda, bellissima e un po’ folle, l’attrice decide di ballare immersa nell’acqua di Fontana di Trevi, coinvolgendo anche il giornalista che perde la testa per lei. Ad aspettarli sotto l’albergo di Sylvia, però, c’è il suo fidanzato che, pieno di rabbia, prende a pugni Marcello, sotto lo sguardo attento dei paparazzi. Il protagonista riprende la sua vita, tra servizi fotografici e misteriose apparizioni spirituali da schiaffare in prima pagina. Tra un lavoro e l’altro, frequenta l’alta società romana, di cui fa parte anche il suo amico intellettuale Enrico Steiner (Alain Cuny), partecipando a strane feste dove si fanno sedute spiritiche e particolari giochi di seduzione. Marcello, però, è stanco e insoddisfatto di inseguire una vita che non gli appartiene…
