La sceneggiatura non originale è tratta dal romanzo omonimo di Peter Mayle.
Il film è ambientato a Gordes e Bonnieux in Provenza, una regione del sud-est della Francia: le scene nel vigneto sono state girate a Château La Canorgue nell'area di Luberon, sempre in Provenza, durante la vendemmia del 2005.
La pellicola riunisce Ridley Scott e Russell Crowe dopo il successo de Il gladiatore. Il budget di produzione è stato di 35 milioni di dollari. Con un incasso di circa 42 milioni, ha avuto un risicato margine di guadagno, secondo gli standard holliwoodiani. Il film è uscito nei cinema statunitensi il 10 novembre 2006, mentre in Italia è uscito il 15 dicembre dello stesso anno.
La colonna sonora del film include i brani Moi... Lolita di Alizée e Chances degli Athlete.

Un'ottima annata, è un film del 2006 diretto da Ridley Scott, che racconta la storia di un efficiente banchiere londinese specializzato in transazioni finanziarie, di nome Max Skinner (Russell Crowe). Max è un uomo determinato, cinico, insensibile e solitario, che ha trascurato ogni aspetto della sua sfera privata dedicandosi totalmente al lavoro e facendosi molti nemici.
Questa insensata realtà nella quale si è alienato privandosi dei veri piaceri della vita, è destinata a subire una bella sferzata. La morte di un suo vecchio zio, Henry, con cui Max ha perso i contatti da molto tempo, catapulta improvvisamente l’uomo in una dimensione completamente diversa da quella che vive.
Max si trova costretto a partire per la Provenza per gestire la vendita della tenuta con vigneto annesso che ha ereditato dallo zio, abbandonando per qualche giorno gli innumerevoli impegni lavorativi. Ma una serie di incredibili imprevisti porta il protagonista a soggiornare maggior tempo in Provenza, distogliendolo lentamente dall’intenzione iniziale di vendere la tenuta e capitalizzarne il valore.
La prolungata permanenza, ha il potere di far riemergere in Max ricordi dimenticati dell’infanzia trascorsa tra i vigneti con lo zio Henri. Le emozioni ritrovate e l’incontro speciale con l’affascinante proprietaria del bistrot del paese, Fanny Chenal (Marion Cotillard), che lo “inebria più del vino”, trasformeranno lentamente il riservato Max da astuto ed insensibile business-man ad uomo amorevole e accattivante capace di apprezzare i piccoli grandi piaceri della vita di cui si è privato per troppo tempo.
